High School Peace Advocate (Full Time)

Position Summary

Embark on a unique and impactful journey as a High School Peace Advocate, where your role is centered on making significant and tangible changes in our community and schools. Through our partnership with Fort Wayne Community Schools (FWCS), you will be pivotal in nurturing a culture of peace in one of five FWCS high schools, mentoring student peacemakers and developing innovative conflict reconciliation strategies. Your unique insights and experiences will contribute to our collective goal of creating a more peaceful and just community. Key Responsibilities:

  • Recruit and mentor student leaders for Peacemaker Academy, our summer nonviolent leadership program. To learn more about Peacemaker Academy, click here.

  • Actively participate in team-based planning and execution of Peacemaker Academy.

  • Lead weekly afterschool Peace Club sessions and support emerging student-led peacemaking initiatives.

  • Build trusting relationships with students by engaging in various school locations, including the Peace Room, hallways, and cafeterias.

  • Collaborate closely with school administrators and staff to align efforts and maximize the impact of peacemaking initiatives.

  • Collaborate with the FWCS Well-being Department, integrating approved practices in restorative discipline and justice.

  • Observe and report serious FWCS Code of Conduct violations, focusing on maintaining a safe and respectful school environment.

  • Conduct restorative circles, participate in reentry conferences, and assist in developing student support plans with the school's Student Support Team.

  • Monitor and analyze school-wide data on student behavior to tailor interventions.

  • Attend FWCS professional learning sessions relevant to the role, and adhere to all FWCS employee work rules and policies.

  • Lead mediations with students in cases of violence or aggression.

  • Demonstrate flexibility and willingness to work outside regular school hours, including for events and special programs, as needed for the role.

  • Assist in coordinating and managing volunteer groups such as the “Peace Grannies and Grampies.”

  • Perform other duties as assigned, adapting to evolving needs and requirements of the program.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree strongly preferred, preferably in social work, counseling, psychology, or a related field. Candidate must demonstrate a strong foundation in understanding human behavior and social dynamics.

  • Proven experience in youth engagement and conflict resolution, with a track record of effective interaction and positive impact on young individuals.

  • Deep commitment to nonviolence as a way of life, with an ability to apply nonviolent teachings in practical, impactful ways.

  • Strong commitment to continuous learning and personal development, with an openness to being teachable and adaptable in evolving contexts.

  • Exceptional communication skills, both verbal and written, coupled with the ability to effectively collaborate with diverse groups and lead with empathy and integrity.

  • Demonstrated leadership abilities, including the skill to manage projects, inspire teams, and drive initiatives forward.

  • Cultural competency and sensitivity, with an understanding of the challenges faced by the diverse populations we serve.

  • Ability to think creatively and innovatively in program development and problem-solving.

  • Strong organizational skills, with the capability to handle multiple tasks simultaneously and meet deadlines.

  • Willingness to undergo and have the ability to pass the Safe Vendor background check as required by FWCS.

Hours and Benefits:

  • Work hours align with the school day: 7 AM to 3:15 PM, Monday to Friday, with occasional extra hours on evenings and weekends. Summer hours fluctuate, but are generally 8 AM to 5 PM, with the month of July off for self-care.
